Carlisle has a population of just over 20,000 residents, but over 37,000 in the Carlise urban cluster, within Cumberland County, PA, for which it serves as the County Seat. While the area was settled as early as 1720, and later in the 1730's by Scots-Irish migrants, Carlisle was laid out and formally chartered in 1751 by the Pennsylvania Assembly and the Penn family. The borough was named after Carlisle, Cumberland County, England, which county in England today is known as Cumbria. Cumberland County, PA has a population of over 260,000.

Located in a portion of the Great Appalachian Valley, during the French and Indian War, Carlisle, PA was home to the Forbes Expedition. Later, Carlisle was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and it was shelled during the Civil War. A dent can still be seen today from a shell in the city's historic courthouse.

The town boasts many gift shops, art galleries, and places to shop for antiques. Carlisle has plenty of outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, biking, and recreational activities in the many parks within its vicinity.

The story of this historic Pennsylvania borough is told both through the Cumberland County Historical Society and its museum in Carlisle as well the US Army Heritage and Education Center which is a must-see for American military history buffs. Residents can also frequent the Appalachian Trail as well as stroll around Boiling Springs, an 18th-century iron settlement.

Its historic downtown area, characterized by well-preserved architecture, offers a glimpse into the city's rich heritage. The city is home to one of the oldest U.S. Army installations, Carlisle Barracks. Additionally, Carlisle is home to the Carlisle Fairgrounds, which hosts one of the nation's largest car shows, attracting many automotive enthusiasts from afar.
